I went to visit the Jemison-Van de Graaff Mansion today April 29th. I was pleasantly surprised to receive a free tour of the house and I learned a lot about the history of the residence. The guide explained to us that it was build over a period of 3+ years and served as Senators Robert Jemison Jr.'s Town house away from his plantation.The DeGraff Mansion or what is left of it. Brief History. The Jemison-Van de Graaff Mansion was constructed by state senator Robert Jemison, Jr. between 1859-1862. Being a prominent politician and businessman, Jemison wanted a home closer to Tuscaloosa, which had served as the state capital from 1826 to 1846.1864 – The village of DeGraff was incorporated and elected its first mayor, A.J. Lippencott. The Catholic Church is built and used as a school house. 1865 – The Civil War ends.
